| Garner State Park is located near between Con Can and
Leakey , Texas. The Texas State
Parks web site has information
and a map of the park.
The park was really packed the weekend we were here. Given the number
of campsites (500), that is lots of people. We had checked the reservation system
the night before our trip. There were only 30 spaces reserved. But there is
lots of people here. Apparently, the good weather encouraged folks to just come on
down. The Frio river runs through the park. The areas of the park that filled
up the earliest were the campsites closest to the river. Our fellow campers were a different mix than what we have seen camping this past fall and winter (Winter Texans). Garner has lots of families and groups of friends sharing one or more campsites. Lots and lots of tents. It is a very festive atmosphere. Groups are staying up late, hanging out around their campfires, and just talking the night away. Kids are all over the place. Running around between the campgrounds. Both older folks and children are riding bicycles all over the area. Radios playing everyone's favorite music. This is a party park. If you are looking for a quiet camping experience, the don't come to Garner from March through September. The Frio River is an attraction in its own right. Tubing, fishing, canoeing, etc. are done on this river. About eight years ago, we took inner tubes down the river through this area. The Frio is very cold even in July and August. By the way, Frio means cold. Great area for inner tubing. Lots of motorcycle riders in the area. A number of them have neat little trailers that they use to move their camping stuff around. |
